The INTERVIS threaded insert, also called self-tapping threaded insert, is a metal fastening element comprising an internal thread, as well as an external thread.
What distinguishes the self-tapping threaded insert from other fasteners is its slot in addition to the threads.
- The self-tapping threaded insert (from INTERVIS®) is a metal insert with standardized tapping and an appropriate external thread.
- At its base, there is an external thread truncation and a slot with sharp edges.
- The Intervis threaded insert is screwed directly into a smooth hole drilled in advance.
The Intervis® threaded insert will behave like a tap by itself threading the hole. This type of attachment is ideal for installation in medium-hard materials, for example light alloys, compressed wood or plastic materials.

What is a threaded insert?
To make repairs or make threads in materials that cannot be tapped, the self-tapping threaded inserts are indispensable.
In soft and medium-hard materials such as light alloys, plastics or even compressed wood, taps often do not withstand repeated stresses. If a screw is tightened too hard or too frequently, the threads may break off, making the part unusable.
This is where the self-tapping socket also called threaded insert comes in!
One self-tapping threaded insert creates an extremely solid anchor with the material in which it is installed because the threaded insert itself creates its own thread during assembly. With this type of self-tapping insert, it is therefore not necessary to pre-drill unlike other conventional threaded inserts or to drill and then tap as to install a helical. A self-tapping insert thus offers increased resistance to pull-out during loosening.
One Intervis self-tapping threaded insert has a standard thread and an appropriate external thread.
- An external thread truncation.
- Two slots with sharp edges.
Using this set, you can screw the threaded insert directly into a smooth, pre-drilled hole, just like you would with a tap.
Threaded insert, self-tapping threaded insert: the advantages of Intervis®
At LGC Industries, we have developed the Intervis brand, an innovative threaded insert.
The Intervis threaded insert offers a practical tapping and screwing solution, allowing you to insert your socket directly into a pre-drilled hole. Thanks to its ability to cut its own thread into the material, this Intervis threaded insert guarantees additional safety and solidity.
We recommend using an Intervis threaded insert in your aluminum assemblies, as its surface treatment eliminates the electrolytic couple between the two materials. Piercing groups are an average indicator. During installation, it is advisable to test by drilling 1/10th above or below the diameter indicated to take into account the particular characteristics of certain materials.
Intervis® threaded inserts have several advantages:
- Can be inserted into the material without pre-tapping
- Elimination of clearance between the spacer and the part
- Excellent pull-out resistance
- Between 30% and 40% of coverage, Intervis® reaches its maximum resistance to tearing
- Eliminating tap wear
- Absolute safety during use
At LGC Industries, there are several ranges of Intervis® self-tapping threaded inserts available in various materials such as Crude Steel (SCTA), Zinc-plated Steel without chrome 6 (SCT), Brass or Stainless Steel.
The different types of Intervis® threaded inserts
Intervis standard slotted threaded insert
The standard Intervis® slotted threaded insert is inserted directly into a previously drilled hole. It works like a tap by creating the thread in the hole itself. This type of attachment is ideal for medium-hard materials such as light alloys, compressed woods or plastics. The installation of this self-tapping insert is simple and effective.
Intervis 3-hole slotted threaded insert
For the Intervis® STHC slotted threaded inserts of low height, we added 3 holes on the self-tapping insert in order to facilitate the evacuation of material chips when tapping the assembly material.
In summary, the Intervis® SCTH 3-hole threaded insert is a practical alternative to the standard Intervis® 1-slot threaded slotted inserts in cases where the heights and thicknesses are smaller.
