Co-Design and Development

In close collaboration with the engineers of the LGC design office, you will define the specifications, technical requirements and constraints of the project.
  • Feasibility control using the FMEA tool, which is used to analyze failure modes, their effects and their criticality.
Prototyping and Testing

Once the concept is approved, the project team creates physical prototypes using a 3D machine and simulation software such as SolidWorks Premium, Spacerclaim.

      Protect your part assemblies with a smooth spacer

      The spacers, which are commonly called “sockets” play an essential role in mechanics and industrial assembly. They guarantee the precise positioning of the components, thus reducing the risk of deformation or unwanted movement. These small parts, often overlooked, can have a significant impact on the overall performance of a mechanism.

      Its cylindrical structure not only provides structural stability, but it is also resistant to mechanical stress.

      The smooth spacer is specially designed to absorb significant loads and maintain the integrity of the parts of an assembly. Its sturdy design makes it an essential choice for projects requiring increased resistance to compression forces.

      What is a smooth spacer or compression socket?

      Les smooth compression spacers, are cylindrical fastening solutions designed to protect assemblies of mechanical and plastic parts against compression forces.

      They are specially designed to be used after the moulding or overmoulding of plastic parts in order to prevent deformation.

      Thanks to their solid and durable structure, these spacers make it possible to compensate for dimensional variations that occur during thermal shocks or the mechanical forces of an assembly.

      In short, a smooth cylindrical spacer offers a reliable and effective solution to ensure the stability and durability of metal and plastic part assemblies, while maintaining their integrity.

      These spacers are found in industrial fields including the automotive industry and particularly in intake manifolds or air conditioning connections.

      How are LGC smooth spacers made?

      There are two different methods for creating a smooth spacer.

      From pin to smooth spacer

      It is possible to start from a solid material that has been machined in order to arrive at a shape of pin. In this specific case, it is necessary to drill a pin to make it hollow, this is called a bore, which complicates the process both financially and technically and environmentally.

      From the tube to the smooth spacer

      In a second case, it is possible to make a compression spacer or socket starting from a tube.

      The use of a tube is highly recommended because it perfectly meets all criteria (price, quality and also carbon footprint).

      That's the technique we use at LGC.

      The first step in manufacturing a spacer is cutting the raw material.

      The raw material is in the form of long, hollow tubes. The material and the diameter depend on the desired final part.

      The tube enters a machine which cuts it to the desired length.

      The part can be further machined with specialized machines.

      For example, chamfers may be required or material finishes may be applied to your spacers.

      The part then goes through a grinding stage.

      A roller presses the parts against a grinding wheel rotating at high speed. It is the wheel that, by abrasion, will modify the diameter of the part to reach tolerances of a few microns (~5-6 μm).

      What are the advantages of a smooth spacer?
